What this page is
The UN/CEFACT Web Vocabulary is a dictionary of supply chain terms, shared across trade,
transport, finance, regulation, production and conformity. UNTP does not have a vocabulary of
its own. It uses a subset of that dictionary, and the subset is defined by the JSON-LD
@context that every UNTP credential declares.
This page is that subset. It lists the classes, properties and code lists the current context
actually references, with each definition taken from the vocabulary rather than restated here,
so there is one place where a term means something. Where a definition reads thinly, the fix
belongs in the vocabulary and the correction appears here on the next regeneration.
Two things follow that are easy to miss. A term absent from this page is one UNTP does not use,
whatever else the dictionary defines. And the property name in a credential is not always the
term name: criterion resolves to includesCriterion, and the mapping column shows both.
For the structure of a particular credential, including which fields are mandatory and how they
nest, use the schema viewer on that credential's own page. This page answers what a term means;
the schemas say what a credential must contain.
Artefacts
The vocabulary is unversioned: a term's URI is stable once published, because what a term means
does not change with a release. The context is versioned with each specification release,
because which terms UNTP uses does change.
The sample credentials declare vocabulary.uncefact.org/untp/0.8.0/context/, which does not
resolve yet. That is deliberate: 0.8.0 is a working placeholder on the way to 1.0.0, and the
versioned context URL goes live when a version is released. Until then the context is served
from the site copy linked above, and anything processing a v0.8.0 sample needs to resolve it
from there.
The vocabulary is served from test.uncefact.org/vocabulary, which is what the context resolves
against. It is called test only because the UNECE infrastructure work on vocab.unece.org is
unfinished; that is where the vocabulary will settle, and the links on this page move with it
when it does.
How UNTP uses the dictionary

Every credential answers to two separate contracts. The JSON Schema says what a credential must
contain, and the context says what its property names mean. Neither constrains the other, which
is why a credential can be structurally valid and semantically empty, or carry correct meaning
in a shape no schema allows.
A credential type is a composition rather than a dictionary entry. The dictionary defines
Product, Facility, Party and Assessment; it does not define Digital Product Passport,
because a passport is a particular arrangement of those terms for a purpose. UNTP owns the
arrangements, the dictionary owns the terms, and the two are versioned differently for that
reason.
UNTP also does not redefine terms that already exist elsewhere. The credential envelope comes
from the W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model v2.0,
names and descriptions come from schema.org, and proof and status terms
come from the W3C security vocabulary. The context references all of them directly, and the
"Other vocabularies referenced" table below counts how often each is used.
Where an implementer needs a property UNTP has not defined, Product.characteristics is the
place for it. Keys there are preserved in the expanded graph rather than dropped, and an
implementer with a published vocabulary of their own should declare a scoped @context inside
the characteristics object to put those keys in their own namespace. Everywhere else, a key the
context does not define is an error rather than an extension, and expansion in safe mode will
say so.
Conceptual model
Six credential types, each wrapping one subject drawn from the dictionary. The diagram is
informative; see Diagrams and UML notation for how to read
it and what takes precedence where a figure and a schema disagree. It shows only the
credential-to-subject relationship, because each credential page carries a diagram of its own
subject generated directly from that schema, which is the one to trust for internal structure.
The traceability event is the one that does not follow the pattern. Its subject is a
GS1 EPCIS 2.0 event rather than a UNTP class, so UNTP
carries EPCIS events as they are defined rather than restating them.
What makes the claims in these credentials comparable is that they share criteria. A product
passport and a facility record each carry performance claims, and a conformity credential
carries independent assessments, and both sides reference the same criterion rather than
describing it in prose. A buyer can therefore line up what a supplier declared against what an
assessor found. The shapes those references take differ by credential and are set by the
schemas, not here.
Reference
Generated from the v0.8.0 context and a vendored snapshot of the published vocabulary.
Regenerate after a vocabulary release with:
node .claude/scripts/refresh-vocabulary-snapshot.mjs
node .claude/scripts/generate-vocabulary-lens.mjs
validate-artefacts checks that every term and code list the context references exists in the
published vocabulary, so a term that disappears or is renamed upstream fails the build rather
than appearing here as a broken link.
Generated from the v0.8.0 JSON-LD context and the published UN/CEFACT vocabulary. Do not edit by hand; see the note above.
The v0.8.0 context uses 42 classes and 160 properties from the UN/CEFACT vocabulary, and draws code values from 22 published code lists. Every term name links to its definition on the published vocabulary, which is the authoritative source for what it means.
Classes marked value carry no identifier of their own and appear inline in a credential; classes marked entity are identified by a URI. That distinction is the vocabulary's, not UNTP's. A class listed here without a property table below is one the context references without expanding its contents.
Other vocabularies referenced
UNTP does not redefine terms that already exist elsewhere. Where a term above resolves outside the UN/CEFACT vocabulary, it links to the publisher that defines it. Terms counts how many distinct terms UNTP borrows from each; references counts how many places in the context use one.
Classes
| Class | Nature | Module | Definition |
|---|
Address | value | core | A postal/physical address of a party or location. |
Assessment | entity | conformity | A specific assessment activity carried out to demonstrate, or to contribute towards a demonstration, that specified requirements are fulfilled. The object of conformity assessment is identified by the object type, currently product, facility or organisation. |
Attestation | entity | conformity | A statement of the outcome of one or more related conformity assessment activities conducted for the purpose of demonstrating that specified requirements are fulfilled. It has a broader intent than the ISO/IEC 17000 term attestation, which refers to the issuance of statements of conformity. |
AttestationCoverage | value | conformity | One thing a conformity attestation declares itself to cover, identified by URI with a human-readable name and a type. |
AuthorityEndorsement | entity | conformity | The authority-derived recognition under which a conformity attestation is issued, for example an accreditation or a government mandate. Renames the former Endorsement, which the scheme no longer references, so its sole use is now the attestation's authorisation. |
Characteristics | value | conformity | A declaration of conformance with one or more criteria from a specific scheme. |
Claim | entity | production | A performance claim about a product, facility or organisation, made against a defined criterion. |
Classification | value | core | A category value drawn from a classification scheme that this vocabulary does not fix: the scheme-relative code and its name, together with a reference to the scheme itself. |
Component | value | production | A discrete, identifiable constituent part of a product as it appears in a bill of materials, together with the quantity used and its availability as a spare part. |
ConformityProfile | entity | conformity | A versioned description of a conformity scheme, or subset of a conformity scheme, in terms of broad scheme activity elements, without including the detailed assessment criteria. A conformity profile may be as broad as differentiating environmental from safety assessment streams, or as granular as representing specific standards. |
ContactPoint | value | core | An addressable channel for communicating with a party (telephone, email, web, messaging), with its number or URI and use type. |
Criterion | entity | conformity | A specific rule within a standard or regulation (e.g. a carbon-intensity calculation rule). |
Dimension | value | core | Overall length, width, height, weight and volume of an item. |
EntityList | value | core | A document listing recognised entities, which a registered identity may be referenced in. |
ExternalEntityList | value | core | An entity list published outside the Verifiable Credentials ecosystem, such as an X.509 certificate authority list or an ETSI trusted list, whose root of trust is the origin of the list URL. |
Facility | entity | core | The physical site (e.g. farm or factory) where a product or materials are produced, handled or stored. |
GeoCoordinates | value | core | A geographic point defined by latitude and longitude (WGS 84). |
IdentifierScheme | entity | core | An identifier registration scheme for products, facilities, or organisations. |
Image | value | core | A binary image encoded as base64 text with its media type. |
Link | value | core | A URL link plus associated metadata (name, type, hash). |
Location | entity | core | A place — address and/or geo-location of a point, area or boundary. |
Material | value | production | Details about the origin or source of a material that a product is made from. |
MaterialUsage | value | production | A record of a material a facility consumes and the period over which it does so. An identity-less value object. |
Measure | value | core | A numeric value together with its unit of measure. |
Organisation | entity | core | An organisational party. |
Party | entity | core | An actor in the supply chain. Roles (buyer, seller, carrier, importer, …) are properties whose range is Party, not subclasses. |
PartyRole | value | core | A party in the role it plays relative to a referencing entity (party + role, optionally on-behalf-of). An identity-less value object, not a party-register entry. |
Performance | value | conformity | A claimed, assessed or required performance level against a metric. The outcome may be a measure, a score from a scheme-defined scale, a determination, or a finding stated in words. |
Period | value | core | A period of time (e.g. a month, quarter or year). |
ProcessDeclaration | entity | conformity | A declaration covering one process area, or one distinct scope within a process area, against applicable international standards. |
Product | entity | production | Detailed information regarding a product, including its identity, provenance and characteristics. |
ProductPackage | value | production | Details of product packaging. Distinct from TransportPackage (transport-domain wrapping). |
RecognitionScope | value | core | One aspect of what a register recognises about an entity: a legal form, class or licence category, a standard or scheme the recognition rests on, an action it covers, or a territorial limit. |
RegisteredIdentity | entity | core | The registration of a party's identity in an official register (the subject of a Digital Identity Anchor). |
Regulation | entity | regulatory | The rule under which import/export is permitted or controlled. Vocab-distinctive: WCO references procedures, not the rule itself. |
Scheme | entity | conformity | The set of rules and procedures that describes the objects of conformity assessment, identifies the specified requirements and provides the methodology for performing conformity assessment (intended to align with ISO/IEC 17000:2020 Clause 4.9). Since conformity assessment schemes, programs and systems are not differentiated here, the term may encompass any of these. |
SchemeDeclaration | entity | conformity | A first-party statement by a scheme owner describing the governance, development and delivery arrangements of its conformity scheme, made with reference to applicable international standards. Its object is the scheme itself, not an assessed product, facility or organisation. |
Score | value | conformity | A single score (code, definition, rank) within a scoring framework. |
ScoringFramework | entity | conformity | A scoring framework used for performance-level assessments against a criterion. |
SoftwareProduct | entity | core | A software product, identified at the granularity of a specific released version. |
Standard | entity | conformity | A published specification (e.g. ISO 14000) against which conformity is assessed. |
SubstanceOfConcern | value | production | A substance appearing on a regulatory candidate list that is present in a material above the threshold that list defines. |
Properties by class
Grouped by the class whose shape each property describes, which is how the context nests them. The property name is what appears in a credential, and the mapping shows the vocabulary term it resolves to and, after the arrow, the type or code list its values come from. Properties resolving to an external vocabulary are shown with that vocabulary named instead of a link, because UNTP references those terms rather than defining them.
Credential envelope
Properties the context places on the credential itself rather than on its subject. The W3C Verifiable Credentials data model supplies the rest of the envelope, so only UNTP's own additions appear here.

Taxonomy concepts
A credential may carry a taxonomy value inline rather than as a bare code, giving the concept's label and definition alongside its IRI. The vocabulary publishes each taxonomy as a SKOS concept scheme, so a member of one is a skos:Concept and there is no class per taxonomy. The scope name below is what appears as the type in a credential; the scheme a value is drawn from is listed under Code lists.
| Scope | Class | Properties |
|---|
ConformityTopic | Concept | definition, name |
PerformanceMetric | Concept | description, name |
SuiteRenderMethod
Mapped to SuiteRenderMethod, which is defined by W3C Verifiable Credential Rendering Methods rather than by the UN/CEFACT dictionary. Each property below links to whichever publisher defines it, and an em dash means that publisher states no definition.
Code lists
Reached through the context's @vocab bases rather than by term reference, so a bare code value in a credential expands to a concept IRI under the listed scheme. Each is published as a SKOS concept scheme; follow the link for the concepts it defines.
| Code list | Used by | Definition |
|---|
assessment-level | assessmentLevel | A code for the nominated assurance pathway for a conformity attestation. The detail of an authority-derived pathway is carried by the linked authority endorsement; the detail of a scheme-derived pathway is carried by the linked scheme declaration or licensed-by-scheme reference. |
assessment-object-type | objectType | A code for the type of entity being assessed. This is intended to be equivalent to the object of conformity assessment as defined within ISO/IEC 17000:2020. |
assessor-level | assessorLevel | A code for the level of impartiality of the issuer of the attestation in relation to the object of conformity assessment. The first, second and third-party descriptions are intended to be equivalent to the definitions provided in ISO/IEC 17000:2020. |
attestation-coverage-type | coverageType | A code for the kind of thing a conformity attestation declares itself to cover. |
attestation-type | attestationType | A code for the type of the conformity attestation. Note: the conformity attestation has a broader intent than the ISO/IEC 17000 term 'attestation' (which refers to the issuance of statements of conformity); the list therefore includes conformity assessment activities (ISO/IEC 17000:2020 Clause 4.1 Note 3) that contribute to conformity assessment without necessarily producing a statement of conformity. |
chain-of-custody-method | chainOfCustodyMethod | Chain of Custody Method UN/CEFACT code list. |
conformity-determination | determination | A code for the conformity outcome an assessment reached against a criterion. |
country-id | countryCode | Country UN/CEFACT code list. |
criteria-type | criteriaType | A code for the kind of normative source a conformity criterion reference points at. An assessment criterion is not always drawn from a registered scheme: it may equally be a published standard, a regulation, or another published document. |
criterion-status | status | Criterion Status UN/CEFACT code list. |
endorsement-type | endorsementType | A code for the type of authority-derived assurance that applies to a conformity attestation. |
evidence-selection | evidenceSelection | A code for who selected and supplied the evidence an attestation rests on. Separate from assessor level, which states the impartiality of the party issuing the attestation rather than the provenance of the evidence it reviewed. |
